I am writing this letter of support for Dan Stevenson, who is running for the Iowa City Community School District Board. As a current West Liberty School Board member and former president of West Liberty’s LULAC chapter, I have had the privilege to get to know Dan through his time as a teacher, union president, and community leader.
We have worked together on various special school and community initiatives. Throughout that work, Dan demonstrated skillful team building and leadership, and always acted with the utmost courteousness and professionalism. It was these skillsets that allowed Dan to negotiate teacher contracts which were seen by both staff and the board as a success.
Dan Stevenson’s active presence and stand for the special and unique community of West Liberty, which is majority Latino/Hispanic, will be of great benefit for the diverse community of the Iowa City Community School District. He is conversationally bilingual, culturally adept, and knowledgeable. Through his experiences as a teacher, a parent, and a community and labor leader, he offers a unique and valuable understanding of school systems.
I am grateful to include Dan as a good friend, mentor, and coach. He has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities of public education. I strongly encourage ICCSD voters to elect him to the Board.
