I recently read “Hospital reports Cedar Rapids nursing home for ‘abuse’ related to resident care.” (July 18, Page 2A.) I appreciate the transparency on issues of abuse/neglect in the aging community. However, I was concerned when I read the quote from the nursing home director who stated he did not believe there had been an error regarding the woman who had a severely low glucose level after being given insulin without food afterward.
I believe that the fine the facility received is not enough in this case. if the director is not willing to admit that there was an error, how can proper training and education on diabetes management and treatment be ensured? State laws exist for a reason — many residents who need long term care are partially or fully disabled, and cannot complete even the most basic activities of daily living Furthermore, they face a persistent societal stereotype — ageism. If their rights are ignored by those at the top of LTC facilities, this implies standards at these places are alarmingly low. How can they be expected to provide high quality care?
I think a follow up with that director/more information on his personal qualifications would be in order. Our population is rapidly aging — an investment in educating health care workers, as well as the general public is extremely important. After all, aging isn’t an if — it’s a when, and it is something the majority of people will go through if they reach old age.
