Jack Carl Miller, 88, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on September 17, 2025. He was blessed to have many members of his loving family by his side for the final week of his life.
Jack was born December 1, 1936 in Sheboygan, WI to William and Mabel (Kaeppler) Krieg. The family later relocated to Des Moines where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955. Jack earned his B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Iowa State University in 1961. He joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and worked on construction projects throughout the U.S., Greenland, and Thailand. In 1964 he married Janice Eness in Ames. Jack’s structural engineering career led him to Cedar Rapids, IA, and in 1977 he founded the firm M2B Structural Engineers. He was an active member of the Tuesday Noon Optimist Club and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. After retiring from M2B he continued to work part-time for Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City while also enjoying a life of leisure fishing, boating, and entertaining grandchildren at his beloved home on the shore of Lake Macbride near Solon, IA. After Jan’s passing in 2011, Jack relocated to St. Louis, MO and then back to Des Moines from where he enjoyed traveling around the world, playing golf, and participating in local trivia tournaments. He worked as a doorkeeper at the Iowa Senate for 5 years starting in 2017.
Jack is survived by his daughters Paula Miller of Iowa City and Jennifer Levelwind of Aurora, MN; grandchildren Henry, Carl and Greta Levelwind and Fred and Giullietta Meraz; and his loving partner Linda. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice, nephews John Flaherty and Dan Rasmussen, and brothers Bill and Richard Krieg. He was adored by his in-laws (and “out-laws”) in the Eness and Krieg families, and he loved spending time with his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and one great-grandniece.
His Celebration of Life will be at Gilbert Lutheran Church in Gilbert, Iowa, on September 27 at 11 am, and he will be laid to rest at South St. Petri Cemetery near Story City next to 4 generations of his wife’s family. The family requests that memorial donations be directed to support Iowa Public Television.
