CEDAR RAPIDS - Kyle Rohrer’s goal with 7:37 left gave the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders a 3-2 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers in the United States Hockey League regular-season opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Cranberry Township, Pa.
The game is part of the USHL’s Fall Classic at the UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex, practice facility of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. Cedar Rapids plays its second and final game of the event, which features all 16 USHL teams, Saturday night against Youngstown.
Cedar Rapids built a 2-0 lead Friday on goals from David Bosco and Noel Ohgren.
Bosco scored on the power play midway through the first period. Ohgren scored on a rebound 6:27 into the second.
Des Moines came back to tie the game: Nate Delladonna scoring midway through the second period and Rhys Wallin just over seven minutes into the third. The RoughRiders outshot the Buccaneers in the game, 22-17, with Ryan Cameron picking up the win in net.
This victory is the 777th in the regular season for head coach Mark Carlson of the RoughRiders. He is one behind P.K. O’Handley for the USHL’s career record. Des Moines’ first-year head coach is Derek Damon, formerly the head of the professional Iowa Heartlanders of the ECHL.
