The carom went skyward, over Hawkeye defensive back Jaylen Watson. Iowa State tight end Gabe Burkle made leaping catch for 17 yards to keep the drive going.
Seven plays later, Kyle Konrardy kicked a 54-yard field goal with 1:52 for what turned out to be the game-winning points.

Notebook
* Switches flipped during this game. In the first quarter, Iowa State had 106 yards, Iowa 23. In the second period the Hawkeyes had 88 yards, the Cyclones 26. Iowa outgained ISU 77-46 in the third quarter, but had just 25 yards to Iowa State’s 60 after that.
* Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz will have to wait a week to become the all-time winningest coach of a Big Ten program.
Tied with Ohio State’s Woody Hayes at 205, Ferentz will almost certainly get the landmark in Iowa’s next game, at home against Massachusetts.
* Becht now has directed six game-winning drives in the fourth quarter for Iowa State.
* The Hawkeyes have passed for a mere 127 yards over two games. They averaged 3.5 yards per pass attempt Saturday after 2.9 the week before against Albany.
* This Sept. 6 game marked the earliest date the two teams ever met.
* Scouts from 10 different NFL teams had seats in the press box, and the Pop-Tarts Bowl had representatives here, too.
Injury report
Iowa starting tight end Addison Ostrenga was hurt on a pass play early in the game. He had his left foot in a walking boot after getting diagnosed.
