It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John L. Phillips. John, 83, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in his Cedar Rapids home. A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, at St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Jon Seda. Inurnment will take place at Baker Cemetery. A vigil service will begin at 4 p.m. followed by visitation until 7 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW in Cedar Rapids.
John was born July 18, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John “Jack” and Bertha Geraldine (Hunter) Phillips. He proudly served in the United States Marines from September 12, 1961, to September 11, 1963. He married Sandra Sue Schulte on June 12, 1971. John loved working at Northwest Bell for over 30 years. John is survived by his loving wife Sandra; brothers Dennis (Diane) and Tim (Pat); in-laws Leslie Mowry (Jay), Bobby King, Louise Reeves, and John (Marsha) Schulte; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. His parents and brothers Ron and Don preceded him in death.
John was a kind, gentle, and generous soul. He always put others’ needs before his own. His love and compassion extended to all who knew him and he will be remembered for his infectious smile and warm personality.
Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Donor Network, and the Solon Library Foundation.
