An Iowa City man was sentenced this week to nine years in federal prison on charges of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Janard Fitzgerald Goins, 34, was arrested on the charges last November. He pleaded guilty in April as part of an agreement through which a third charge, felon in possession of a firearm, was dropped.
Law enforcement conducted a search warrant in January 2024 at Goins’ Iowa City residence and found methamphetamine, crack and marijuana. They also found $5,877 and a Glock 17 9 mm handgun, according to the release.
After completing his prison sentence, Goins will be required to serve a three-year term of supervised release.
