Season begins with play about death in October

Dreamwell Theatre has announced shows for its 28th season.
They open their 2025-2026 season with a comedy from Terry Pratchett about death, just in time for Halloween, with “Mort.” Next up is a play written by local artist Wren Stone about love, addiction and the unknown, called “Shiver.”
Dreamwell closes its season with “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” an award-winning comedy by Matthew Lopez the New York Times deemed “stitch-in-your-side funny.”
What: “Mort” by Terry Pratchett, adapted by Stephen Briggs
When: 7 :30 p.m. Oct. 16-18; 2 p.m. Oct. 19
Where: The James Theater, 213 N. Gilbert St., Iowa City
Death comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job. But when Mort is left in charge for an evening, he allows his heart to rule his head, and soon the whole of causality and the future of the Discworld itself are at risk. Directed by Matthew Brewbaker.
What: “Shiver” by Wren Stone
When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13, 14, 20 and 21
Where: The ArtiFactory, 120 N. Dubuque St., Iowa City
Aspen and Dogwood are left stranded in the woods after getting into an accident on the way to Aspen’s wedding. They are not alone —there are strange and eccentric creatures that inhabit the woods. As time seems to strain and twist, both Aspen and Dogwood are made to reflect on the moments that lead them to exactly where they are as they try to find their way through the woods. Directed by Owen Brightman.
What: “The Legend of Georgia McBride“ by Matthew Lopez
When: 7:30 p.m. April 23-25; 2 p.m. April 26
Where: The James Theater, 213 N. Gilbert St., Iowa City
Casey’s young, broke and just found out his wife is going to have a baby. To make matters even more desperate, Casey is fired from his gig as an Elvis impersonator in a run-down, small-town Florida bar. When the bar owner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act, Casey finds that he has a whole lot to learn about show business —and himself. Directed by Michele Payne Hinz.
