CEDAR RAPIDS — One of downtown Cedar Rapids’ most popular open-air events returns this month for a new milestone.
Market After Dark, which draws tens of thousands of attendees each year, is marking its 10th event. The milestone coincides with the 20th season of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market.
This year’s free celebration, set for Aug. 23 from 6:30 to 11 p.m., will feature over 100 vendors, entertainment, special lighted attractions, games, artwork and more.
“Market After Dark has become a summer tradition in Cedar Rapids, and we're turning up the excitement for its 10th year,” said Jenn Draper, events contractor for the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance. “We’re bringing back live entertainment, adding new surprises, and creating an unforgettable night downtown that celebrates a decade of fun, community, and summertime magic.”
Patrons 21 and older can enjoy the open-container environment by filling up their cups with beer and wine from various vendors within the designated market area. Participating downtown establishments also will be issuing wristbands and serving alcohol within the venue.
Alcohol will be sold until 10:30 p.m. But be sure to bring your debit or credit card, as all market beer tents this year will be cashless.
This year’s market will encompass Second, Third and Fourth avenues SE between Second Street SE and Fifth Street SE.
Live music returns on two stages. Surf Zombies will take the main stage from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Fifth Street SE. Crazy Delicious will take over from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Other entertainment throughout the market will include lighted ballerinas, face painting, a light tunnel, yard games, a floral wall staged for photos, and “other elements of surprise and delight,” the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance notes.
