John Douglas Akers, 74, passed away at his home on July 23, 2025. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m., August 9, 2025, at the Local #43 Union Hall, 816 1st Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
John was born on June 9, 1951, the son of Alfred “Dutch” and Jeanette (Holub) Akers. John was united in marriage to Patricia E. Carter in November of 1974, becoming a family with her two young children, David and Kristin.
John was a strong and proud member of the Laborers’ Local 43 since 1975, his 50th Anniversary. He made a lot of friends over the years, with many characters adding to his stories along the way. He was generous with his time for friends, always lending a hand. His family would like to give a special mention to his lifelong, respected friend, Matt Petrzelka.
John is survived by his sister, Cecilia Perez; brother, Michael “Mike” Akers; stepchildren, Kristin Day and David Dunek; four grandchildren, Jennifer Day, Mathew Dunek, Zachary Dunek, and Nathan (Miranda) Dunek; three great-grandchildren, Irelyn, Brixton, and Rowan; nieces and nephews, Charlene (Bill) Hall, Victor Allen (Patti) Perez, Veronica (Edward) Jett, Jeremiah Kenny, Thomas (Erin) Kenny, Scott (Shirley) Akers, Nathaniel Dooley; and many great-nieces and -nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Pat Akers; parents, Alfred “Dutch” and Jeannette (Holub) Akers; siblings, Harold Akers, Keith “Moose” Akers, Crystal Anderson (alias Linda Jones), and Roberta Dooley; and nephew, Randy Dooley.
