Five new security cameras have been installed in downtown Cedar Rapids as part of the city’s public safety camera system. They aren’t yet fully operational, but are anticipated to go live by the end of the week, according to Cedar Rapids Police Lieutenant Tony Robinson, who oversees the public safety camera program.
Footage from the cameras will be retained by the police department for 30 days.
Four of the cameras were placed in the 200 blocks of Second Ave SE, Third Ave SE, Second Street SE and Third Street SE. The other is at the intersection of Second Ave and Fifth Street SE.
The new cameras do not detect or read license plate data but were installed as part of the city’s contract with Flock, the company that recently installed license plate reader cameras around Cedar Rapids. The contract is funded through the Cedar Rapids Police Department’s general fund according to the city’s finance department.
