Carolyn “Cari” Jean (Jones) Malone
Iowa City
We are saddened to announce that our mom, Carolyn “Cari” Jean (Jones) Malone, 85, died in her home on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 following a brief illness. Cari was proud to have her body donated to scientific research through the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program.
Cari was born August 27, 1939 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Phillip Leslie “Les” Jones and Mary Margaret Evans. She attended St. Patrick’s School and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Iowa City. She studied theater at the University of Iowa.
Cari’s love of the fine arts continued her entire life. She was an avid reader and wrote both poetry and short fiction. She loved the annual Iowa City Arts Fest and collected many paintings and sculptures by local artists. She loved dance and went at least once a year to see contemporary dance companies at Hancher. Cari was always attending classes at the Iowa City Senior Center. She was a member of the poetry reading group Read Aloud which read at schools and public events. Her most recent readings were by banned authors.
Our mom was passionately involved in local, state and national politics her whole life. She helped run many Democratic campaigns and was involved in voter registration programs. She always spoke proudly of meeting three of the Kennedys.
Cari enjoyed a long career at The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in the Department of Internal Medicine. She retired as the Division Coordinator of the Department of Internal Medicine in 2010 after thirty-five years of service.
Cari was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society in Iowa City.
Cari is survived by her children, Bridget Malone (Vanessa Lowe) of Coralville, Ramona Black (Joe Callahan) of Winchester, Mass., Sean (Frannie) Malone of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Harper Lee, Nathanial and Betty Malone; and many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Cari was preceded in death by her parents, Les and Mary Jones, all of her siblings; M. Joan Soucek, Peg Day, Tom Jones, and Janet Thompson; and her son, Kevin Neal Malone.
Per our mother’s wishes, no service is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the ACLU.
