Richard Hansen was born May 23, 1928 in rural Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Plymouth schools, Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City, attended Mason City Junior College and then graduated from Drake University in 1953. He received his Certified Public Accounting certificate from the State of Kansas in 1955. He was employed by Arthur Andersen & Co. in Kansas City, McGladrey, Hansen, Dunn & Company in Cedar Rapids, Collins Radio Company, and was an agent for American Family Insurance Co. He operated his own accounting business in Cedar Rapids for 20 years. He was last employed as Controller of the Great Plains Gas Division of National Propane Corporation.
In 1946 he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in the Yong Dong Po suburb of Seoul, Korea. He served with the 42nd Engineer Battalion and the 2nd Engineer Construction Group. In 1950 he was recalled as a reservist serving with the 32nd Engineer Construction Group while being formed at Camp Carson, Colorado and then served in Korea during 1951.
Richard was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, member of the Tuesday Noon Optimist Club, and Friendship Force of Cedar Rapids-Iowa City. He regularly played bridge with friends. Richard was married to Veryl Sorensen of Thornton, Iowa in 1951, who was a graduate of Saint Mary’s School of Nursing, Rochester, Minnesota.
They had four children. Richard leaves behind his sons Daniel Hansen of Houston, Texas and Andrew (Deb) Hansen of Cedar Rapids and daughter Jill Hansen of Houston, Texas; granddaughter Christine (Santiago) Osorio; great-grandson Malcolm Osorio of Plano, Texas; and a brother, Gerald (Laquetta) Hansen of Mason City. Richard was predeceased by his wife Veryl and daughter Jane Hansen who lived in Dallas, Texas.
Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.
