George Anthony Miller, 94, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, July 18, 2025 at the Woodlands at Meth-Wick Community. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2025, St. Pius Catholic Church by Rev. Jon Seda. Burial: St. John Cemetery at 1 p.m. after service. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, and 9:30 a.m. at the church before service time.
Vigil and Rosary: 4 p.m., Friday, August 8, 2025 before the visitation at Teahen Funeral Home.
George is survived by his children, Michael (Laura Runkle) Miller of Cedar Rapids, Catherine (Davis) Foster of Iowa City, Mary Ann (Brian McKnight) Miller of Iowa City, and James (Virginia) Miller of Pasadena, CA; grandchildren, Adam, Christopher, Alex, Sam, Libby, Christopher Tomás; great-grandchildren, John, William, Nico and Hazel; sister, Margaret Ann (Len) Gruca of Sydney, Australia; and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; and brothers, Jim Miller and Tom Miller.
George was born on October 7, 1930, son of Anthony and Florence Olmstead Miller in Cedar Rapids. George was baptized on October 9, 1930. George was very active in Boy Scouts growing up and was a Scout leader. He received many awards for scouting. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949 and went on to get his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Iowa. George married Mary McNally on November 26, 1954 in Grinnell. The young couple moved to Painesville, OH where George worked for what was then Diamond Alkali. Their four children were born in Ohio. In 1968 he and his family moved to his hometown of Cedar Rapids when he came to work for what was then Collins Radio. He spent the rest of his career at Collins in several positions including head of a chemistry lab and as a process engineer in Advanced Technology and Engineering. He retired from Collins in 1997. During his career he was a co-author on seven patents.
George served as the Chairman of the Iowa Chemical Society under the American Chemical Society, and was a member of the ACS for over 70 years.
He taught CCD at St. Pius Catholic Church and served as a Eucharist Minister.
George joined the Knights of Columbus in 1954. He became a Grand Knight while in Ohio. After moving
back to Cedar Rapids he joined the Knights of Columbus Council 909 in the Bowen General Assembly. He was Grand Knight for that council in 1970 and 1972. He served as the financial secretary of 909 for many years. He became a Faithful Navigator for his fourth degree in 1971 to 1972. Later, he went on to become a 60-year third degree Knight, and then a 50-year fourth degree Knight.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Pius X Parish or Meth-Wick Community in George’s name.
