Donald Wayne Koppenhaver, 89, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Memorial Services: 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Linn Grove Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon. Burial will follow at Linn Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include his children, Gary (Kay) Koppenhaver, Karol (Aaron Franck) Koppenhaver, Scott (Lori) Koppenhaver, Ann (Mike O’Brien) Koppenhaver; grandchildren, Brent (Sara) Koppenhaver, Leslie (Tyler) Johnson, Ross (Rachel) Koppenhaver, Kelly (Jarod King) Nelson, Talia (Chad) Breidinger, Jeremy Koppenhaver, Tyler Koppenhaver, Korey Koppenhaver, Jenna (Brice) Steiner, Elliot Koppenhaver, Aarika (Alex Hovey) Koppenhaver, and Beau Rolland.
Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Taylor and Courtney Franck, Trulie Breidinger, Cora, Calvin, and Carter Koppenhaver, Sylvia and Alan Johnson, Kaydence Koppenhaver, Parker Koppenhaver, Ripon Steiner, and Strider Hovey, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Don was born on October 25, 1935, in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Everette and Della (Tenley) Koppenhaver. He graduated from Martelle Consolidated Schools in 1953. On June 15, 1953, Don married Margaret Martin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He farmed for the next 12 years while also attending the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a BBA degree with a major in accounting in 1967. He completed his degree in three years while raising a family of four. Don was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and earned many scholarships and academic awards. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1968.
His accounting career began at McGladrey, Hanson, Dunn & Company before starting his own public accounting firm, Koppenhaver & Associates. During his 43-year accounting career he served a term as the Cedar Rapids Chapter President of the National Association of Accountants. Don retired in 2010.
Don enjoyed having a good laugh and staying active. He loved sports, especially playing fastpitch softball as a shortstop, attending athletics events for the Mount Vernon teams, coaching Babe Ruth League baseball, and keeping himself fit. Don enjoyed the outdoors with fishing trips to Canada, and spending time with Margaret at their cabin in Guttenberg. He was an avid gardener, and especially liked growing tomatoes, pumpkin blossoms, cucumbers, fruit trees, peonies, and gladiolas.
He was a lifelong member of Linn Grove Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. Don and Margaret also lead worship services together at Hallmark Care Center.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife of 68 years, Margaret, and sisters, Helen (Faye) Nielson, Doris (Bruce) Ingels and Lois (Elmer) Stolte.
The family would like to thank the staff of Lisbon Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon and Cherry Ridge for the exceptional care provided to Don during his time with them.
