Daniel Tungesvik, 46, of Ames, Iowa, passed away on July 17, 2025. The family will host a celebration of life for family and friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 22, at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone. A private burial with full military honors will be held at a future date.
Dan was born May 20, 1979, in Boone, Iowa, to Carroll and Judy (Sande) Tungesvik. He graduated from Boone High School in 1998, having participated in athletics and band. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, graduating with a degree in political science and history.
During his senior year in college, Dan enlisted in the Iowa National Guard. Shortly after graduation, he was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, for one year with the 234th Signal Battalion. For his military service, he was awarded several decorations, most significantly the Combat Action Badge, Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal.
Upon returning from Iraq, Dan attended William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked in family law and served as a magistrate for Boone County. In addition, he was a past member of the Boone Rotary and served several years on the Boone Community School Board. Dan was a great advocate for people, especially for those who needed someone to believe in them.
He is survived by his parents, wife Karen, stepchildren Ben, Aliza, Anna, and Jake; sister Jennifer (David) Hamel of Cedar Rapids; brother Mike (Jaclyn) Tungesvik of Boone; several nieces and nephews; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, several uncles, an aunt, and a cousin.
Dan was a kind, compassionate, and fun-loving human. He loved live music, history, and watching sports. He enjoyed cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs and traveled to several Hawkeye Bowl games with his family.
Memorials in Dan’s memory may be directed to the Israel Family Hospice House, Puppy Jake Foundation, or the future Boone Area Veterans Center.
