IOWA CITY — A downtown bakery staple is closing in Iowa City after more than a decade in business.
Molly’s Cupcakes, 14 S. Clinton St., has announced plans to close in a July 11 social media post. The bakery will close its doors on Aug. 10.
“Like many small businesses, we’ve faced mounting challenges in today’s economy, and while this chapter is ending, we know the memories (and sugar rushes) will live on,” franchise owner Jamie Smith said in the post.
Smith opened the Iowa City location as the cupcake bakery’s first franchise and first Iowa location in 2012, as cupcake trends fueled by reality TV shows gained popularity. Molly’s Cupcakes has 15 locations across Iowa, Chicago, New York City, Michigan and Ohio.
The Chicago-based brand will have one Iowa location remaining at 215 E. Third St., Suite 101, in Des Moines.
“We are endlessly grateful to our loyal customers, our amazing staff, and this supportive community that has made Molly’s feel like home,” Smith added. “We hope you’ll come see us in the coming weeks to get your cupcake fill, share your stories, and let us say thank you.”
The Iowa City closure follows the closure of the North Liberty location several years ago.
