Luka Garza, the two-time consensus All-America basketball player at Iowa and 2020-21 National Player of the Year, has agreed to a two-year, $5.5 million fully guaranteed contract with the NBA’s Boston Celticcs.
The Minnesota Timberwolves declined their team option on Garza Sunday. The four-year pro played in 39 games for Minnesota in the 2024-25 season, averaging 3.5 points.
Garza, Iowa’s all-time leading scorer, played in 32 games for the Detroit Pistons after Detroit drafted in the second round in 2021. He has been with Minnesota since, playing in 92 games over three seasons. He appeared in five playoff games for the Timberwolves this season, seven last season.
Minnesota had a $2.35 million option on Garza that they declined to extend on Sunday, their deadline for making that decision.
Boston needed frontcourt help. Backup Frank Kornet recently left the Celtics to join the San Antonio Spurs in free agency, after starter Kristaps Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks to clear some salary. Plus, Al Horford is a free agent and is expected to leave the club this week.
