AMANA — The Whirlpool Corporation has significantly reduced the number of layoffs expected at its Amana manufacturing facility.
The company in April announced its intent to layoff 650 employees to align to “current market conditions.” Those layoffs were set to occur June 1, although that date was later pushed back.
This week, the company announced it had reduced the number of expected layoffs to 250 — meaning 400 workers originally slated for layoffs will retain their positions at the Amana facility of just over 2,000 employees.
The scaled-back layoffs will be effective July 28, per an email from a Whirlpool representative that stressed the decision was “not tariff-related.”
“While difficult, this decision is essential to meet evolving consumer demand, and is critical to best utilizing the Amana plant and optimize our U.S. operations,” a corporate statement reads. “As the only remaining U.S.-based manufacturer of major kitchen and laundry appliances, Whirlpool Corporation is proud that approximately 80 percent of the products we sell in America are made in America.”
The Iowa County factory, in Middle Amana, assembles refrigeration products under the Amana, JennAir, KitchenAid, Maytag and Whirlpool brands.
The company is working with affected employees to offer a transitional support program and connections to unemployment benefits and resources through Iowa Workforce Development.
