Coverage of Saturday events shows imbalance

I’m writing to express my disappointment with your recent coverage of two very different events — and the obvious imbalance in how they were reported. The headline describing the "Army Military Parade barrels through DC" during the 250th birthday celebration of the U.S. Army was misleading and disrespectful. Those vehicles weren’t barreling; they were part of a patriotic display honoring one of the oldest and most respected institutions in our nation’s history. It was no different than what we proudly cheer for during the Fourth of July: flags waving, military displays and a reminder of the sacrifices that make our freedoms possible. Would you ever use such a negative tone to describe a 4th of July parade? I doubt it.
Even worse was the lopsided coverage itself. The so-called “No Kings Day” protest, attended by a group with a niche message, was given more page space, more photos, and more attention than the celebration of our army. That’s not just poor judgment — it’s insulting. You gave greater visibility to a protest that many don’t even understand, while pushing aside a nationally recognized milestone that deserved far more respect.
As someone who served the public for decades, I understand what it means to represent people, and the media should, too. Your job is to report fairly, honestly, and without bias. Sensational headlines, shallow coverage, and misplaced priorities don’t build trust — they break it. Cedar Rapids readers — and especially our veterans, service members, and their families — deserve better.
