Two Iowa City residents were charged Wednesday with misusing more than $500,000 that belonged to an elderly family member, for whom one of the individuals was caregiver.
Keelan France, 26, and Nicole Linderholm, 49, are charged with financial exploitation of an older individual, a class B felony. According to a criminal complaint, France was the caregiver of and had power of attorney for his 76-year-old grandmother — Linderholm’s mother — who has Alzheimer’s disease.
Between November 2022 and January 2025, France, who lived at the same residence of the victim, withdrew $813,111.30 from his grandmother’s IRA account and put it in her checking account. He then transferred $656,962.01 from the checking account to various accounts controlled by Linderholm, who used the money for her own financial benefit.
The case was investigated by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau and is being prosecuted by the Johnson County Attorney’s Office, according to a joint news release from the two agencies.
France and Linderholm have not yet appeared in court, but both have been summoned for an initial appearance on June 16.
