Julianne Pirtle, 102, died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
Julianne was born in Missouri on April 5, 1923, the daughter of Victor Elmo and Laura (Paton) Pinet. Julianne was a graduate of Lisgar High School in Nova Scotia, Canada and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri. She met her future husband, Eugene Claude Pirtle, at the University of Missouri.
Julianne and Eugene were long-term residents of Ames. Following Eugene’s death Julianne moved to Iowa City.
Julianne was committed to peace throughout the world. She travelled to many countries and served on the board of the United Church for World Ministries. Julianne was an accomplished seamstress and knitter, making down coats and many knitted items for family and friends. She was a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Iowa City.
Julianne lived a full life and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include three children, Edyie (Bob) Stika of Iowa City, David Pirtle (Cynthia Jorstad), and James (Gayle) Pirtle; grandchildren, Rebecca (Ben) Levy-Pirtle, Sarah La Tour, Samantha La Tour, Rowan (Cassie) Pirtle, and Graham Pirtle; great-grandchildren, Sam, Gabe, Winter, and Lily; and former daughter-in-law, Brenda Barton.
Julianne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her children Victor and Margaret; grandchildren, Mike and Jeff Pilkington and Kaitlyn Pirtle; and former daughter-in-law, Dianne Levy.
Julianne donated her body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. Memorial donations may be directed to Faith United Church of Christ or to Iowa City Hospice.
