Altoona
Janet Lee (Sloan) Schwieger, 84, of Altoona, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at Kavanaugh House. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Janet lived a life marked by compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication to those around her.
Born on September 15, 1940, to William “Lee” Sloan and Leila (Flitsch) Sloan, Janet carried her nurturing spirit into a lifelong career in care and service. She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing and began her journey as a nurse, later earning her Nursing Home Administrator License from Des Moines Area Community College. In 1971, Janet began her distinguished 30-year tenure as Administrator of the Bloomfield Care Center and Manor House in Sigourney. Her commitment to providing dignified and loving care for the elderly was a calling she fulfilled with grace. She continued to serve her community for another nine years as Manager and Marketing Director at Mulberry Place Assisted Living in Bloomfield. In addition to her professional work, Janet was actively involved in her community. She served as past President of both the Davis County Athletic Club and the Bloomfield Rotary Club, demonstrating her passion for service, youth activities, and community development.
Janet married Daniel Ray Schwieger on August 25, 1963. Though they later divorced in 1977, their bond endured, and they remained close friends and companions until Dan’s passing in 2002.
Janet's life was filled with simple joys and deep devotion to her family. She found happiness in preparing meals for loved ones, tending to her garden, camping under the stars, and casting a fishing line in quiet waters. A lifelong enthusiast of the Iowa State Fair, she proudly missed only three fairs in 80 years. More than anything, she was her children’s biggest cheerleader—never missing a school sporting event and always offering her unwavering support.
She is survived by her three children, Tammy Stapp of Altoona, Rodney Schwieger of Bloomfield, and Sam (Cathy) Schwieger of Aurora, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jacob (Morgan) Stapp, Kalen (Jay) McCrea, Stephanie Schwieger, Daniel Schwieger, and Benjamin Schwieger; and two great-grandchildren, Bennet and Banks Stapp. She also leaves behind three sisters, Linda (DuWayne) Schminke, Kay (Kent) Neighbor, Jean (Gene) Neighbor, and one brother, Bill (Cletis) Sloan. Janet will also be lovingly remembered by her special family friend, BJ Grant, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, at Murdoch Funeral Home, 3855 Katz Drive, Marion, Iowa, with burial to follow at Lafayette Cemetery. Following the burial, refreshments will be held at the home of Gene and Jean Neighbor. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Starting at the time of service, a live stream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Janet.
