Donald Trump began to hate wind power in 2011 when he feared that a proposed offshore wind farm would threaten the beauty of his new golf course in Scotland. His hatred continued and, on his first day in office in 2025, he issued an executive order pausing wind power development on federal land and waters. He likes fossil fuels — coal, oil, and natural gas.
Many states believe wind energy is good. Attorneys general from 17 states and the District of Columbia have filed suit challenging Trump’s executive order. They contend Trump doesn’t have the authority to stop wind power development and that doing so jeopardizes a power source critical to economic vitality, public health, and climate goals.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has joined countless law suits filed against the Biden administration by attorneys general of other states but, strangely, she has not joined this one. It’s strange that she has not joined it because Iowa has invested a great deal in wind power. Only Texas has a greater investment in wind power. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2023, 59% of Iowa’s energy was generated by wind. Don’t you think Iowa should continue this amazing development of wind power? So do I. Don’t you think Attorney General Bird should join this law suit to challenge Trump’s executive order that stopped that development? So do I.
