Jeffrey Earl Carter, 76, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away on May 8, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital due to complications from Diabetes.
Jeffrey was born in November of 1948, in Iowa City, to Vernon and Lois (Eves) Carter. Growing up as one of the “Nichols’ Boys”, he attended elementary school in Nichols and later graduated from West Liberty High School in 1966. He attended college at the University of Northern Iowa graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Business.
After college, Jeffrey traveled the country selling fire hydrants for Clow Valve before returning home to help his father on the farm. In 1984, he went to work for Muscatine County as the Emergency Manager preparing and assisting with cleanup of natural disasters. He retired in 2012 after 28 years of service.
On April 7, 2007, Jeffrey married the love of his life, Marty Kimzey, in a beautiful ceremony, surrounded by loved ones in Key West, Florida. After retirement, they became “Winter Texans”, spending the colder months enjoying the sunshine and palm trees on South Padre Island.
Jeffrey had a love for all sport and activity. An avid golfer, Jeff played on the Eastern Iowa team for West Liberty Country Club as well as playing annually in the Peacock Open with his closest friends. Jeff also loved playing slow pitch softball. He played for many teams over the years, including the Drillers as well as many Shenanagins’ teams. No matter if it was golf, softball, canoeing, fishing, or just enjoying the afternoon on the porch with Marty, Jeff just loved being outside.
Jeffrey will best be remembered for his great storytelling and willingness to lend a helping hand wherever needed.
Jeffrey is survived by his loving wife, Marty; his children, Shawn and Chase; grandson, Jaiden; sister, Lynne. Special thanks to friend Teddy Hilliard for donating his kidney to Jeff, allowing him to enjoy 10 more years of life with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lois, and sister, Cheryl.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 13 at the West Liberty Country Club from 2-5 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association in Jeff’s honor.
