Patty J. Everist, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away May 3, 2025, at Cottage Grove Place. She was born June 23, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 29, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Cedar Memorial. The funeral Mass will be at St. Matthew Catholic Church at 10:30 AM on May 30, visitation before the funeral at 9:30 AM.
Patricia Josette was the fourth child of Art and Agnes Mallon. Her parents, brother Bill, sisters Mary Martin and Anne Lethbridge, and Scoop’s parents and brother Tom Everist preceded her in death. Patty attended St. Matthew grade school and Mount Mercy High School. She completed her college degree in education at Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado. Patty was an avid golfer, winning tournaments at an early age.
Patty met the love of her life, Scoop Everist, on a blind date the summer before her senior year of college. Long-distance dating via weekly letters in the mail and occasional phone calls cemented their relationship. Patty and Scoop were married on August 12, 1961, at St. Matthew Church. Their early dance lessons led to a life of dancing to Johnny Mathis. Patty taught at Wright School before they started their family.
Patty & Scoop shared a deep connection with her sister Mary & her children Steve, Dan, Joe, Tim & Molly. Summers were spent as a young family in Dubuque at the cabin on the Mississippi River. Learning to water ski, boat trips up the river & the annual Fourth of July celebrations were part of a lifetime of memories. Patty especially enjoyed traveling with Scoop & the kids on spring break road trips. Later, she & Scoop enjoyed traveling to many international destinations.
As an amazing wife, incredible mother and true friend, Patty could always be counted on for a home-cooked meal, amazing bread, and her famous chocolate chip cookies. Known for growing beautiful flowers in her garden, zinnias will forever be planted in her memory.
Patty is survived by her husband Scoop, their children, Peggy, Meg (Michael), and Doug (Vanesa), nieces and nephews, and countless friends that she treasured dearly. Memorial contributions in Patty’s memory may be directed to St. Matthew Catholic Church, St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House (catholicworkerhouse.org) or Alzheimer’s Association.
