MOUNT VERNON — You could say that the Mount Vernon girls cleaned up both during and after the Wamac Conference track and field meet Thursday night.
There were the Mustangs, tidying up the west bleachers of the Martha Parsons Family Athletic Complex.
And there were the Mustangs, repeating as conference champions.
On a night in which 16 records fell, Mount Vernon’s girls and Clear Creek Amana’s boys reigned.
“Today wasn’t about how far I threw or how fast we ran,” said Mount Vernon senior Libby Dix, who swept the girls’ shot put and discus events. “It’s about scoring as many points as possible.
“We’re doing great. I’m excited.”
Dix set a meet record in the discus (150 feet, 7 inches), Sydney Maue did likewise in the high jump (5-8), and the Mustangs won seven events and totaled 162.5 points. Williamsburg was second with 104.5, followed by Marion (94) and West Delaware (86).
Clear Creek Amana’s boys got three record performances from sophomore Tay Seals and piled up 134 points. Center Point-Urbana (107) earned runner-up honors; Mount Vernon (75.5) was third.
Seals reset Wamac records in the 110-meter hurdles (14.10 seconds) the open 100 (10.69) and shuttle hurdle relay (59.36).
He also anchored the winning 4x100.
“Being on a team like this ... it’s amazing. Everybody can push each other,” Seals said.
“We all like each other. If you don’t have team chemistry, if nobody is cheering you on, what are you running for?”
CCA’s Landon Prince reset his state-leading mark in the discus at 191 feet, 2 inches, and won the shot put at 61-7 1/4.
Seals was named boys’ most valuable performer by conference coaches.
Ava Hocker of Williamsburg was voted as the top girl; she won the 400-meter dash (57.54 seconds), the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.98) and anchored the Raiders’ record-setting sprint medley relay, which ran 1:47.21 and climbed to No. 4 in the state (all classes).
Mount Vernon successfully retained its girls’ title behind its field-event prowess and its distance dominance.
In addition to Dix’s sweep in the throws, Maue — who hadn’t been part of the team for the first half of the season — established a career best in the high jump.
“I had shin splints for the first part of the season, but about halfway through, I realized I was missing it,” Maue said. “The coaches kept the door open for me to come back, but I think it’s good that I waited.”
Evelyn Moeller won the 800 and the 1,500, Kiersten Swart claimed the 3,000 and the Mustangs won the 4x800.
Marion’s Abby Cave raced to victory in the 100 and 200 and anchored the Wolves to the 4x100 crown. Two of those three were in record time.
“We had a bad handoff (in the 4x200), but we were able to push that aside,” Cave said. “The weather was great, not too windy and not too cold.”
Center Point-Urbana’s Nathan Miller ran three 400s in one meet for the first time this season.
He anchored the Stormin’ Pointers’ sprint medley relay to a meet-record clocking of 1:31.48, which ranks No. 1 statewide, then won the 400 (49.07) and the 400 hurdles (53.45) by narrow margins.
“Yeah, I’m dead,” he said. “I couldn’t push as hard as I wanted, but I gave it all I had in the last 50.”
Other top performances:
* Grinnell’s Aiden Gosselink joined Linn-Mar’s Abby Mecklenburg as the only girls’ long-jumpers in state history to reach the 20-foot plateau. She did it with a half-inch to spare.
* Vinton-Shellsburg won the boys’ 3,200 and 1,600, in 9:50.80 and 4:26.66.
* West Delaware’s Avery Schmitz won the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, and anchored the Hawks’ winning shuttle hurdle relay.
