I am so sorry to report that I missed the funeral. The once upon a time Republican Party is no more. When it lived, it was almost violently anti-communist. Republican Sen. McCarthy held hearings to purge our country of the “Reds.” Now those who love Trump have no qualms about his buddyship with Putin. Some have even spoken loudly against Ukraine, a democracy fighting Putin for its very survival.
Then we see Trump’s peace treaty. Putin gets everything he has won with his aggression. Ukraine gets — as Trump has said, “the ability to survive.” Of course, this is survival meaning a loss of the Crimea and other land that Russia has taken. The “treaty” also does not provide for the return of the 2,000 Ukrainian children stolen by Russia.
Needless to say, Putin and his loyalists are clicking their heels together with joy. I have heard they are singing the hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus” with the new version, “What a friend we have in Trump.” And the Republican legislators and the MAGAs are proudly standing with Trump and Putin. I don’t think anybody cried at the death of the Republican Party. I suppose they looked the other way because they were afraid of Trump’s revenge.
