In May, turn awareness into action for mental health

Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us of something simple yet powerful: your mental health matters.
Mental health matters no matter who you are. No matter what you’re carrying. Whether you’re dealing with daily worries, facing a personal crisis, or battling thoughts of suicide. You deserve support. You are not alone.
Mental health struggles do not discriminate. They touch all of us—in our own lives and in the lives of those we love. If you are struggling, your feelings are real. Your pain is real. And reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness - it is an act of courage and hope.
This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month theme is "Turn Awareness into Action."
Awareness is important. It opens our eyes. It teaches us to recognize when someone is hurting, including ourselves. But awareness alone isn’t enough. It’s action—small, everyday actions—that change and save lives.
Action looks like noticing when someone isn’t themselves and taking the time to ask if they’re okay. Action looks like learning about local mental health resources before a crisis happens. Action looks like standing up for better access to care and saying loudly and clearly: mental health matters.
At Foundation 2 Crisis Services, we believe that no one should have to walk through their darkest moments alone. We offer free, confidential support 24 hours a day—whether by phone, chat, text, or in-person—because every person deserves a safe place to turn when life feels overwhelming.
This May, we invite you to move beyond awareness and take action:
- Go on a short walk, schedule coffee with a friend or participate in a hobby you enjoy. These small actions can help you build sustainable habits.
- Learn about local resources. Empower yourself and others with knowledge before a crisis happens.
- Start honest conversations. Ask friends, family and coworkers how they’re really doing. Listen with your heart.
- Reach out for help. If you or someone you know is struggling, call our crisis line at (319) 362-2174 or call/text 988. Help is always here.
Together, through compassion and action, we can create a community where mental health is honored, help is easy to find, and every person knows: you are seen, you are valued and you are never alone.
