William Robert (Bob) Martin was born June 8, 1925, in Martinsburg, IA and passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025, in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was the son of Willis and Carrie Marguerite Martin. Bob graduated from Franklin High School in 1943, enlisting in the Navy at that same time. He served bravely in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. Part of his tour of duty was aboard a destroyer, the USS Caldwell. After retiring from Goss Graphics in 1990, Bob enjoyed many reunions with crew aboard the Caldwell.
In 1949, Bob married Patricia Barnett. To that union were born a daughter, Julie, and two sons, Paul and Bradley. In 1959, Bob married Mary Jones Hurt and to that union were born two daughters, Susan and Sharon.
Bob enjoyed bowling, puzzles, playing cards and games. He was a loyal Iowa Hawkeyes and Cubs fan. He dearly loved his family that extended to 11
grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Bob was a long-time member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 735.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, his daughter, Julie Martin Davis, his daughter-in-law, Debra Martin, and his siblings, Roy (Pearl), Leland (Enid), Elisabeth Martin and Joyce Blair.
Bob is survived by his sons, Paul and Bradley, two daughters, Susan Lansing (Brett) and Sharon Dixon (Don Miller), and a brother, Oliver Martin.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories on Friday, May 2, 2025, starting at 3:00 pm. Inurnment with military rites will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
