The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its first boys’ soccer rankings of the 2025 season on Monday.
Here’s a look at the ranked Gazette-area teams:
Class 1A
No. 1 North Fayette Valley (7-1) — The 2024 1A state champs don’t appear to have lost a beat. Last year’s top-scorer Lincoln Aeschliman is back at it, leading the Tigerhawks with 10 goals. NFV’s lone loss came on the second half of a doubleheader on April 19 against Class 4A Dubuque Hempstead (4-4).
No. 2 West Liberty (8-0) — The Comets have outscored opponents 38-2 thus far — a dominant start for a 1A state semifinalist in 2024. Uriel Andrade-Martinez leads the team with 17 goals (third-most in Iowa); freshman Iker Garcia Rosas isn’t far behind with 13.
No. 3 Iowa City Regina (6-0-1) — Yes, the Regals’ top three scorers from last season are gone — it doesn’t seem to have slowed them down thus far. Junior Laird Holden has taken command of the scoring responsibilities with 14 goals, good for fourth in 1A.
No. 10 Dyersville Beckman (3-0-2) — After starting 2-0, the Trailblazers tied River Valley Conference foes Tipton and 2A No. 2 Regina, 1-1. Beckman will have an opportunity to strengthen its resume Friday as it travels to West Liberty for another challenging RVC matchup.
Class 2A
No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier (4-1) — The Saints opened the season with a signature win over Class 3A No. 9 Marion, 1-0, on April 1. Xavier was 10-6 last season and qualified for the Class 3A quarterfinals. Now, the Saints appear to be among the top teams in Class 2A. Junior Vincent D’Amico leads the team in goals with 6.
No. 5 Williamsburg (6-1-1) — It’s been a solid start for a Raiders team back at full strength this season, led by a healthy Mason Eggleston. Eggleston and Braysen Doehrmann are tied for the team lead with 10 goals apiece.
Class 3A
No. 4 Iowa City Liberty (5-3) — The Lightning struggled last year (5-9) after winning the 3A state championship in 2023. Roman Riggs missed all of last season with an ACL injury after being Liberty’s third highest scorer in ’23. He’s back and his eight goals are good for the team lead.
No. 7 Cedar Rapids Washington (3-1-1) — After an opening 4-1 loss to 4A No. 8 Ankeny Centennial (5-2), the Warriors tied Iowa City West, 1-1. They then rebounded with wins over Davenport Central and Center Point-Urbana. Junior Holden Smith is among the key pieces performing well for a Washington team that reached the 3A state semifinals last season.
No. 9 Marion (5-1) — The lone blemish for the Wolves, a 3A state quarterfinalist in 2024, was an opening, 1-0, loss to 2A No. 2 Xavier. Since then, Marion is 5-0 outscoring opponents 29-1, led by Bryker Langfald who’s tops on the team with 13 goals.
Class 4A
No. 6 Cedar Rapids Prairie (5-2) — A 1-0 win for the Hawks over 4A No. 7 Waukee Northwest on April 19 certainly opened some eyes. The Hawks have been stellar defensively, allowing just five goals through seven games. Offensively, senior Drew DeSmidt leads the Hawks with six goals.
No. 10 Iowa City High (4-0-1) — A season-opening tie against Ottumwa was a wake-up call for the Little Hawks, a state tournament qualifier in 2025. Since then, they’ve rattled off wins over Linn-Mar, 3A No. 4 Liberty and 2A No. 2 Xavier. Seven different Little Hawks have scored goals this season.
