Republican Bernie Hayes is running against Democrat Angel Ramirez in the special election to represent Iowa House District 78, which includes a section of northeast Cedar Rapids and a broad swath of southeast Cedar Rapids.

The winner of the April 29 special election will represent southeast Cedar Rapids in the state Legislature.

Republicans have yet to produce a formal challenger, although Linn County GOP will soon host its own nominating convention.
