Cedar Rapids man charged with cutting wires providing internet, cable to neighborhoods

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Monday on charges that he cut and stole a piece of fiber wire from behind his neighbor’s house, cutting off internet and cable services to two neighborhoods in southwest Cedar Rapids.
Steven Herman, 78, is charged with critical infrastructure sabotage, second-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree theft.
According to a criminal complaint, he used a ladder and garden shears to cut the ImOn fiber wire behind his neighbor’s house on the 2800 block of Evelyn Drive SW. He did it around 12:45 p.m. on Mar. 22, and was seen with the stolen wire by two witnesses, according to criminal complaints.
A warrant, with a stated bond amount of $15,000, was issued for his arrest on Apr. 9. He was arrested on the warrant Monday.
