MOUNT VERNON — In three weeks, Marion High School is set to take some loaded girls’ events to the Drake Relays.
The Wolves don’t intend to be mere traffic, fodder for their big-school sisters.
“It’s going to be really fun,” Kyra Cordes said. “We’re just getting started.”
In both the sprints and the middle-distance events, Marion experienced — in Cordes’ words — some “top-of-the-world” moments at the Mount Vernon Relays on Thursday at the Martha Parsons Family Athletic Complex.
The Wolves won six events — three relays — and vaulted into the top five in the state (all classes) in three of them.
It started early, with Marion’s 3,200-meter relay team holding off Mount Vernon. The Wolves’ 9:31.87 effort stood at No. 2 statewide as of late Thursday night; Mount Vernon (9:36.66) was at No. 5.
Cordes led off in 2:17; Addison Dabroski anchored in 2:19 to hold off a challenge by Mount Vernon’s Evelyn Moeller.
“Everybody was saying, ‘She’s coming,’” Dabroski said. “I couldn’t let her catch me.”
Marion’s 4x200 ran 1:45.94 (No. 5 in the state), and Kelsey Cave won the 200 in 25.37 seconds (No. 3).
Other winners were Kelsey Lovell in the 100, Cordes in the 1,500 and the 4x100 relay.
The Wolves finished second to Mount Vernon (145-101) in the girls’ team standings, but matched the Mustangs with six event titles.
“We’ll take it,” a jubilant Cordes said after her 4:47.46 effort in the 1,500.
Clear Creek Amana claimed the boys’ title with 131 points. Reigning Class 1A state champion Lisbon was second with 96.
CCA’s Landon Prince swept the throwing titles; he soared to No. 1 statewide in the shot put (57-10 1/2) and climbed to No. 2 in the discus (176-5).
Despite a couple of harrowing moments late in the race, sophomore Tay Seals took the 110-meter hurdles title in 14.10 seconds (No. 3 statewide).
“I can definitely go faster,” he said. “I’ve got some of the best coaches in the state, and I’ve got teammates to push me. It’s only going to get better from here.”
Seals anchored the Clippers’ 4x100, clocked at 42.99 seconds (No. 4 in Iowa). CCA also won the sprint medley relay and shuttle hurdle relay.
Other highlights:
* Moeller’s 800 title (2:19.10) led Mount Vernon’s girls. Other champs for the Mustangs were Edith Dawson (3,000), Libby Dix (discus) and Lucy Wischmeyer (long jump). The Mustangs were crowned in both medley relays.
* Benton Community’s Owen Von Ahsen ran away with the boys’ 400-meter hurdles in 54.57 seconds, a mark that ranks No. 2 in Iowa.
* Center Point-Urbana got big efforts from its 800- and 1,600-meter relays, both of which were anchored by Nathan Miller. The Stormin’ Pointers’ 4x200 clocking of 1:29.87 is No. 3 statewide.
* Benton’s Ana Glawe crossed the 39-foot barrier for the first time this season.
“Everything came together today,” she said. “It was the best series of throws I’ve ever had.”
