Eric M. Hender
Cedar Rapids
Eric M. Hender passed away, family by his side, Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 16, 2025, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Linge Lounge at Theatre Cedar Rapids.
He was born on February 24,1940, in Kalona to Robert and Dorothy (Weiss) Hender. He was a graduate of Marion High School and Colorado College. After earning his degree, he returned to Iowa, where he built a successful career in finance, working for Merchant’s National Bank, Life Investors, Securities Corporation of Iowa, and AAVIN Equity Advisors.
Eric believed in the power of community. He dedicated his time and talents to various organizations that helped the lives of others, especially children. He served on the boards of United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Variety Club and Tanager Place where he was inspired by the dedication of George Estle. He believed in the power of the arts and enjoyed his involvement with Theatre Cedar Rapids, especially interacting with Richard Barker.
He had a passion for life's simple joys and grand adventures alike. An avid gardener, his backyard was a testament to his green thumb. His love for model trains reflected his attention to detail and appreciation for craftsmanship. He was a dedicated reader and could often be found lost in the pages of a book.
Eric was a world traveler, always eager to explore new cultures, savor diverse cuisines, and collect stories from every corner of the globe. His appreciation for fine wine was more than a hobby—it was a way of connecting with friends and family over a shared glass and good conversation.
Not fond of cold winters, Eric and Julie chose to escape Iowa’s harshest months by spending their winters in Rancho Mirage, CA, where they could enjoy sunshine and warmth. Eric’s family gathered in Rancho Mirage earlier this year to celebrate his 85th birthday.
Eric is survived by his wife of 42 years, Julie (Waggoner), whom he married on March 6, 1983 in Cedar Rapids; children, Dayna (Scott) Moore of Lone Tree, CO and Anne (Duane) Jasper of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Austin Moore, Spencer Moore, Blake Moore, Erica Bloomhall, and Lucille Bloomhall; and nephew, Jacob (Jessica) Hender. He was preceded in death by his parents: siblings, David Hender and Robert Hender; and niece, Rachael Sparks.
In lieu of flowers. memorials may be given to Theatre Cedar Rapids, Tanager Place or charity of choice.
