Bruce Howard Hayes, 72, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids with visitation to begin one hour prior at the funeral home. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Bruce was born June 6, 1952, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Howard DuBois and Martha Fink. He graduated from West Delaware High School and then served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 – 1974. While in the military he was united in marriage to Mary Gaffney on September 10, 1971, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont, Iowa. Following his honorable discharge he attended Hawkeye Community College. He worked for Tri-State Engineering, Shive Hattery and the City of Iowa City. Bruce was a member of the American Legion and the Marine Corps League.
Bruce loved fishing, watching Westerns, science fiction, and family gatherings. He enjoyed socializing with friends at Home Port and Just Jules in Cedar Rapids. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Hayes; son, Jeremiah Hayes; grandson, Jacob Ciha; brother, Lyle Hayes; and brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Gloria McDowell, Regina (Terry) Weber, Mike (Mary) Gaffney, Dennis (Amy) Gaffney, Tim (Trish) Gaffney, Susan (Jeff) Crowley, Linda (Jon) Miskew, Frank (Nancy) Gaffney and Patricia Gaffney.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kathleen; brother, Carl; and favorite uncle, Buddy; and aunt, Betty.
