Outgoing Kirkwood President Lori Sundberg

After waiting 52 years to hire its first female president in 2018, Kirkwood Community College last week introduced three women as finalists to succeed Lori Sundberg when she retires later this year.

Kirkwood Community College last week raised the tax levy rate for property owners across its service area by 5 cents – bringing its overall property tax levy to $1.39 for the upcoming 2024 budget year, or 3.8 percent above the current rate.

The coming spring semester likely will be the last for Kirkwood Community College’s Iowa City campus – at least in its current form – after a recent study of the site found the institution would have to spend nearly $40 million over the next 24 years to maintain the campus that’s seen a 75-percent enrollment drop in the last five years.

Four years after taking over the sprawling Kirkwood Community College system in 2018 as its fifth president and first female head, Lori Sundberg, 64, on Monday announced plans to retire next fall.
