The Linn County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to approve an $850,000 settlement with the mother of a woman who died in the Linn County Jail in 2022.

A negotiation over the price to house federal inmates at the Linn County Jail may result in the termination of an agreement between the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the United State’s Marshals Service.

The Linn County Jail may stop housing federal inmates for the U.S. Marshals Service if the two organizations can’t come to an agreement in the next few weeks.

A Oelwein man who was severely beaten and injured by two inmates in the Linn County Jail last year will receive a $85,000 settlement from the county.

Darrell Lee Lathum was found later that same day and returned to jail.

Local officials in Linn and Johnson counties are exploring solutions to potentially relocate jail facilities, as one county’s facility nears the end of its life while the other has years left, but sits in a less-than-ideal spot.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office will use the $1.7 million it was rewarded in the second round of ARPA funding to add 12-14 medical isolation cells to the Linn County Jail, which should help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the jail.
