Lucille Waggoner, 95, died Friday evening, March 21, 2025, at University Hospital, Iowa City following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment in the Wyoming Cemetery. Pastor Phil Jorgensen will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, has taken Lucille and her family into their care. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Jones County Senior Center or Onslow Community Club.
Surviving are nieces and nephews, Sherry (Don) Keppner, Diane (Tom) Ebert , Bonnie Niemtschke, Beverly (Larry) Moser, Cindy (George) Ricks, Tina Carson, Claudette (Bill) Bryant, Darlene (Larry) Daniels, Joyce (Pete) Bartels, Tom (Jennifer) Orr Denise (Kirk) Waggoner-Nipper, Lori Waggoner, and Jim (Amy) Christianson, and many great-nieces and nephews. Lucille was also fortunate to have many special neighbors that were like family, Mark and Kris Doll, Julie and Dennis Orris, Judy and Tom Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, siblings, Marvin and Joyce and a niece, Ellen Cox.
Lucille Irene Woodward was born at home in rural Burlington, Iowa on December 8, 1929, the daughter of Homer and B. Lois Gehring Woodward. Lucille attended the Brush College rural school and graduated from the Burlington High School. She then attended Burlington Junior College, Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), the University of Iowa and University of Boulder, Boulder, Colorado to obtain her teaching certificate. Lucille taught mostly 2nd and 3rd grade starting in 1950 at West Union, Anamosa, Fort Madison, Wyoming, and Onslow. Lucille married Paul Waggoner on June 16, 1957, at the First Methodist Church, Burlington. The couple farmed near Onslow, Iowa. She substituted in grades K thru 8, retiring in 1971 to help Paul on the farm. The couple built a new home in Wyoming and left the farm in 1993.
Lucille was a member of the Altrurian Federated Women’s Club in Onslow, the Teachers Association and Jones County Porkettes where she held many offices.
