CEDAR RAPIDS — A new type of doughnut shop has opened in Cedar Rapids.
Munchi Mochi, an anime themed café with mochi doughnuts and boba tea, held its grand opening on March 12 at 37 Kirkwood Ct. SW.
The new doughnuts take mochi, a Japanese rice cake, and turns it into fried doughnuts. They’re distinguished from regular doughnuts by their Pon de Ring shape.
Flavors on the menu include churro, green apple, red velvet, strawberry lemonade, ube and black sesame.
The owners of the new spot cite inspiration from the trendy doughnut shops opening up in cities across the country.
“These spots weren’t just about great snacks — they were the perfect hangouts, offering a chill vibe without the coffee-shop buzz and a lighter, tastier twist on the classic doughnut,” Munchi Mochi’s website says. “When we thought about where we could bring this energy next, Cedar Rapids and its surrounding areas stood out. With a growing population of tech-savvy, trend-loving young people, it was the perfect place to create something new.”
Munchi Mochi is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
