Iowa’s third men’s basketball entry into the NCAA transfer portal came Monday afternoon when sophomore forward Pryce Sandfort joined classmates Owen Freeman and Brock Harding.
Sandfort, a 6-foot-7 forward from Waukee, played in all 33 games for the Hawkeyes this season and averaged 8.8 points. He scored in double-figures in each of Iowa’s last four games, including a 16-point, 11-rebound performance in its victory at Nebraska on March 9.
He is the brother of Iowa senior Pryce Sandfort, who finished his Iowa career last week with a 30-point game against Illinois in the Big Ten tournament.
Pryce Sandfort made 40 percent of his 3-point shots (56-of-140).
It’s no certainty Sandfort will leave the Hawkeyes. In his social media post Monday, he wrote that he is “excited to go through this process with an open mind. I’ll also be monitoring the Iowa program and will be keeping all of my options open.”
Ladji Dembele is the only member of Iowa’s four-player 2023 recruiting class who hasn’t announced he’s going into the portal. The other three made their announcements after Iowa fired their head coach, Fran McCaffery, Friday.
Also, verbally committed 2025 recruit Joshua Lewis, a 4-star prospect from Tampa, Fla., told 247 Sports Monday that he was re-opening his recruitment.
"I was excited about playing for Coach Fran,“ Lewis said, ”but after the recent changes to the coaching staff I feel it's in my best interest to explore other opportunities."
