I saw the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform last night at the Hancher Auditorium and every number was just stunning. I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage for the first number which was called “Grace.” The artists involved in putting this number together are all to be applauded. From the costumes to the choreography and the dancers you gave this number life. It was just breathtaking.
“Many Angels” the second act was just that, many angels. Now I think I know what angels must look like. Ethereal, flowing, moving together as one with love. The choreography, costumes, and dancers were perfect.
The final act named “Revelation” and choreographed by Alvin Ailey was not just spectacular, it was a testament to his heart as a dancer and choreographer. He brings his heritage to life in such a way to draw us all in. The music selected to go with each dance was a tribute to his people and their struggle and perseverance. The dancers brought the music and the vision of Alvin Ailey to the stage in such a way as to bring in the entire audience. By the final number we were all on our feet and completely immersed in the song and feeling the joy that this company brought to the stage. Thank you for being here in Iowa City.
