It’s with great joy and deep sadness balancing precariously in our hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, Eleanor McCall Read (Roberts) on February 8, 2025.
Mom, the only child of Albert E Kay and Myrtle M McCall, was born in Regina, Saskatchewan during the Depression. She attended high school at Central Collegiate. During her senior year, an all-star athlete, Jack Read, caught her eye. They were married after high school graduation.
Mom and Dad decided to attend college in the States at Monmouth College (Monmouth, IL). She worked in the library at bookbinding repair while pursuing a double-major in math and biology. Dad worked nights and they both worked during the summer. For the next four years our parents, with the help of Mom’s mother who lived with us, obtained an education and the family grew.
Mom was a teacher all her professional life. As we moved, she found employment in the local school system to support the family. Initially, she taught grades 4, 5, 6 grades in Galesburg, IL, then Cedar Rapids, IA (Hoover and Cleveland schools), and Marion, IA. Later she taught remedial English and math at the junior high level in Springfield, MO. After more than forty years of teaching, Mom retired and started travelling, mostly to Europe. She visited the family homeland in Scotland and saw the Pope in Rome. And like all good Saskatchewanians, she wintered in Texas and in the Caribbean.
Mom leaves behind a legacy of memories to be cherished by her four children, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. At this time, we are reminded of her frequent expression to us: “this too shall pass”. It’s hard for us to understand that now but she has been ready for this journey for some time. She is loved.
