One of the top players who will enter the NCAA transfer portal in the next five weeks is an Iowa Hawkeye, and he wasted little time.
Owen Freeman, Iowa’s 6-foot-10 sophomore center, entered the portal Saturday, a day after Hawkeye players became eligible to do so because their head coach was fired.
That coach, Fran McCaffery, signed Freeman off the Moline High School state-championship team of 2023 that also featured Iowa guard Brock Harding.
Freeman played in 19 games and was averaging team-highs of 16.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots when his season abruptly ended in late January because he had surgery on a finger. His absence in the lineup was felt by his team, which went on to finish 7-13 in the Big Ten and 17-16 overall.
“With the recent coaching change,” Freeman said in a social media statement, “my family and I have decided it would be in my best interest to enter the transfer portal.”
