Work to replace the roadway on 42nd Street NE will begin Monday, disrupting normal traffic flows in the area.
The city of Cedar Rapids announced Friday that work this year will focus on a stretch of the road from east of Edgewood Road NE to just east of Pine View Drive NE. In 2026, work will move east, from Pine View Drive NE to Wenig Road NE.
The work will include:
- Pavement patching from Edgewood Road to River Ridge Drive;
- Replacement of pavement from River Ridge Drive to Pine View Drive
- New storm sewer and water main
- Sanitary sewer replacement
- Replacement of sidewalks, ADA curb ramps and crossings added at side roads.
The city council awarded a contract for the project in January. E & F Paving Co., LLC, of Cedar Rapids, bid $4,336,112.55. The estimated cost was $5.1 million. The project will be funded through the city’s Paving for Progress program.
Beginning Monday, traffic from Edgewood Road to River Ridge Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Following this stage of work, 42nd Street will be close to through traffic for the remainder of 2025 work, which is expected to conclude in November. Detours will be posted.
Twin Pines Golf Course will remain open for the entirety of the project.
