The Iowa City Fire Department has extended condolences to the loved ones of a 99-year-old woman who died after being struck by a fire engine Sunday morning.
The fire engine was leaving a medical call at Legacy Senior Living, 1020 Scott Blvd., in Iowa City, at 6:46 a.m. when it struck a pedestrian, identified as Evelyn Bothmer, 99. She was declared dead at the scene.
“The Iowa City Fire Department and City of Iowa City are devastated by this incident and we share our deepest condolences with the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased, as well as the staff at Legacy Senior Living,” a statement from the fire department reads.
It is unclear whether Bothmer was a resident of Legacy Senior Living. The facility did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the collision, at the request of the Iowa City Police Department, a spokesperson for the state patrol said.
No one has been placed on leave in response to the collision, according to the Iowa City Fire Department. The department said in a statement that it is fully cooperating with the state patrol in its investigation.
