CEDAR RAPIDS — Gianna’s Italian Beef has closed its Downtown Cedar Rapids location without warning.
Diners noticed the closure starting last week, when the restaurant’s usual “Sorry, we’re closed” sign was modified with a handwritten addendum: “(closed) forever. Thanks for the memories!”
It’s unclear what day the restaurant closed. No advance announcement was made on the restaurant’s website or social media page.
The closure comes after the restaurant, 375 Third St. SE, slashed hours last summer. Restaurant partner Vinny Russo told KCRG-TV9 it was getting difficult to stay open in the evening, given the decrease in downtown office traffic since the pandemic.
Adam Hadjis named the restaurant after his late daughter, Gianna, when he opened it in October 2018. Gianna, who loved getting Italian beef sandwiches with her father, was 4 years old when she died in an accident.
In addition to the purple booth named after her, diners were greeted by her memory with her cheerful portrait in the restaurant.
“I learned the impact you can have on the community (with a restaurant),” Hadjis said. “This will hopefully build a legacy where people will be saying Gianna's name for years to come.”
McOtto’s Family Restaurant closes in Anamosa
ANAMOSA — A pizzeria and family restaurant has closed in Anamosa after more than 20 years.
McOtto’s, 100 Chamber Dr., closed on Feb. 9, according to a social media announcement posted on Feb. 11.
“Thank you for your years of support,” the post said.
Those with unused gift certificates can send them to 313 South Locust St., Monticello, IA 52310 for a refund, or redeem at Diamond Pi in Monticello — the owners’ other remaining restaurant.
