The Iowa Photo: Skating shadow

“It’s usual that you find people walking around without a coat on during wintertime in the Midwest,” says Gazette photojournalist Savannah Blake. “With highs in the upper 40s at the end of January, I was tasked with finding people outside taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather. I opted to check out the Iowa City area and drove past a man hanging out at the skate park. As I observed him skating around the ramps, I noticed the shadow his figure was casting and wanted to take advantage of the direct sunlight. Crouching down low allowed me to get his full shadow in the frame as he rode the ramp and nicely mirrors his action up top. Another aspect I enjoy about this photo are the sunbeams that almost act as an arrow leading you to the action of the photo. ”
