SWISHER — A March 4 special election is set in Swisher on whether to approve a 1 percent local option sales tax.
If approved, the sales tax would be effective July 1.
Fifty percent of the tax proceeds would go toward property tax relief. The other 50 percent would go to public infrastructure, such as parks and recreation, public safety and economic development.
Some 61 percent of the Swisher voters approved a 1 percent local option sales tax in November 2014. The tax, used for street improvements, is set to expire at the end of June.
Early, absentee voting
In-person early voting is now available at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office in the county administration building at 913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City.
The office’s hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays until March 3. The office will be closed on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 17. One day of Saturday in-person voting — on March 1 — will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the auditor’s office.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the election is 5 p.m. Tuesday. Completed ballots must arrive at the auditor’s office before 8 p.m. March 4 to be counted.
