ZAGREB, Croatia - Hawkeye Wrestling Club’s Spencer Lee harvested more gold Wednesday.
Iowa’s three-time NCAA champion, two-time Hodge Trophy winner and AAU James E. Sullivan Award recipient won his second straight international tournament since earning silver at the 2024 Olympics in Paris last summer.
Lee won all three matches to capture the 57-kilogram/125.5-pound title at the Zagreb Open. Lee posted a 6-2 decision in the finals, beating Azerbaijan’s Islam Bazarganov, the 2024 European bronze medalist.
The former Hawkeye scored a takedown in the first for a 3-0 advantage at the break. He closed with one point for a step out and a late takedown.
Lee opened the tournament with an 11-0 technical superiority over Georgia’s Luka Gvinjila.
Lee reached the finals with a 6-3 victory over former Penn State NCAA champion Roman Bravo-Young, who represented Mexico.
The three-time age-level World champion went 5-0 and dominated his way to a title at the Henri Deglane Grand Prix of France last month.
